WHO says 1.6 million people fall ill every day worldwide due to contaminated food

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has recently said that millions of people across the world fall sick due to consumption of contaminated and unsafe food. WHO regional director Saima Wazed further informed that nearly 40 per cent of those affected are children under the age of five, who are already at a high risk of malnutrition and mortality due to unsafe food. The statement comes in the wake of World Food Safety Day, observed annually on June 7. According to an IANS report, Saima Wazed said, “Every day, around 1.6 million people across the world fall sick due to consumption of unsafe food.”

The WHO regional director further explained that contaminated food leads to lost productivity, which in turn leads to increased medical costs due to foodborne illnesses. According to the WHO, this amounts to “an estimated $110 billion in annual losses in low- and middle-income countries.”

According to IANS report, Saima Wazed also pointed out that South-East Asia is the second most affected region after Africa in terms of contaminated food. A major reason for this is the tropical climate, which promotes the spread of pests and toxins, as well as the effects of climate change. “Food safety is a collective responsibility, and governments, producers and consumers need to play their role in ensuring food safety,” she said, urging the world to promote safe food practices for better health.

World Food Safety Day, established in 2018 by the United Nations General Assembly, draws global attention to food safety, motivating action to help prevent, detect, and respond to public health threats associated with unsafe food. The theme for World Food Safety Day 2024 is ‘Be Prepared for the Unexpected’.

WHO says 1.6 million get sick annually from unsafe food. For solve this problem and we should test food in best testing labs. Like in India, Equinox Labs or other testing labs , a food testing facility, can fight this by checking for contaminants in food, auditing hygiene practices at food businesses, and offering training to food handlers on safe food practices. These steps can help ensure food safety and reduce illnesses. https://foodtestinginahmedabad.com/
