For many, the day doesn’t start until we take that first sip of tea or coffee. It’s a relaxing ritual, a chance to start the day in a relaxed way before the rush of responsibilities. However, some of us consume caffeine multiple times throughout the day. Despite the widespread appreciation for these beverages, there are specific times when consuming them may not be ideal. Drinking tea and coffee at inappropriate times can lead to a number of health issues related to digestion and nutrient absorption. So, when should you avoid these beverages? Let’s look at the experts’ recommendations to help you enjoy your favourite beverages without any regrets.

How much tea or coffee is safe?

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), both tea and coffee contain caffeine, which stimulates the central nervous system and can lead to dependence. The recommended daily limit is not to exceed 300 mg of caffeine. 150 ml of brewed coffee contains 80-120 mg of caffeine, instant coffee contains 50-65 mg and tea contains 30-65 mg of caffeine.

When should you avoid tea or coffee?

Ayurvedic expert Dr Dixa Bhavsar Savaliya recently took to Instagram to share information about staying away from tea and coffee. Here are three important times to avoid these beverages:

1. First thing in the morning

While many people start their day with a cup of hot tea or coffee, Dr. Savalia advises against it. Consuming caffeine on an empty stomach can disrupt the production of cortisol, the primary stress hormone, leaving you feeling anxious and unbalanced before your day even begins.

2. With food

Do you like to drink tea or coffee with meals or snacks? Now is the time to reconsider this habit. Both tea and coffee are acidic and can hinder digestion. When you consume protein with tea, the acidity can harden the protein, making it difficult to digest. Also, if tea is consumed immediately after a meal, it can hinder iron absorption. To improve digestion and nutrient absorption, avoid tea and coffee at least an hour before and after eating.

3. After 4:00 PM

Those who like to have a cup of coffee in the evening should know that caffeine can affect your overall health. Dr. Savalia recommends staying away from caffeine at least 10 hours before bedtime and preferably 6 hours before bedtime. Staying away from caffeine after 4 pm can improve your sleep quality, help in liver detoxification, reduce cortisol levels and promote better digestion.
