She insisted that she pay for everything whenever they went out together. Speaking about the separation, Modi said, “Sushmita was very special to me. She developed me into a lot of things that I am today. She was extremely special. She was very much a part of my life then and will be (even today), but it was just that the distance was too much for us.”

He said, “Her career was in India and my life was in London. But it was a very special relationship. I have the fondest memories of her. She is still a very dear friend of mine and I just wish her all the best.”

Praising her as a “self-made woman”, Modi said, “She would never accept anything from anyone. So when someone says she was a gold digger, Lalit was a diamond digger. She was really a diamond digger.”
