Weekly Survey: Will you buy the Motorola Edge 70 Max?

Weekly Survey: Will you buy the Motorola Edge 70 Max?

With the controversy over its software update policy now almost cleared up, the Motorola Edge 70 Max comes across as an interesting device – it features the most powerful chipset in the Edge 70 series, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, compared to the Snapdragon 7 and Dimensity 8 series chips in other phones. Its 7,100mAh battery also beats the Pro/Pro+, which has a 6,500mAh battery, making it the largest battery in the series.

Of course 90W wired charging is nice too – 25W wireless charging with proper Qi 2.2 support, magnets, etc. is even better. This is something that very few Android manufacturers offer and on very few devices.

The Moto Edge 70 Max packs a 7,100mAh battery with 90W wired and 25W magnetic wireless charging.

The screen is also the best in the family – a 6.82″ OLED with a 1440p+ resolution and 144Hz refresh rate, plus it’s the only LTPO panel in the series so far. It’s also bright with an advertised peak brightness of 7,000 nits.

The phone has an aluminum frame, Gorilla Glass 7i panels on the front and back, as well as IP68 and IP69 ratings. What do you dislike? Well, there’s no microSD slot or 3.5mm headphone jack (we understand you thinking that).

Apart from that, the camera is quite basic with a 50MP main, 8MP ultra-wide and a 32MP selfie module. It’s not a bad camera, the main sensor is 1/1.56″ and can record 4K video at 60fps. However, given the asking price, it’s not unreasonable to expect more. Speaking of which, check out the table below:

UK £700
European Union €800
India ₹55,000 ₹60,000

We should note that in Europe, the Max comes with a free pair of Moto Buds Loop and a charger (90W or 125W, depending on the region). This is something to keep in mind when considering price.

Motorola’s update policy remains a problem – the Max will receive 3 OS updates or perhaps only 2. We don’t know which and we’re not sure Motorola even knows – we tried asking but to no avail. Similarly, the phone is eligible for either 5 years of security patches or just 3 years. These things matter on expensive phones!

For alternatives, we can look at the Motorola Edge 70 Pro, which launched at €800/£750. While its Dimensity 8500 Extreme is no match for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, it is one of the fastest mid-range chips out there. The Pro has a 50MP 3.5x/81mm telephoto camera and an upgraded 50MP ultra-wide. Its battery has a 6,500mAh capacity and it supports 90W wired and 15W wireless (non-magnetic) charging. There is also the Motorola Edge 70 Pro+, which is the regional version of the Pro for the Indian market – its price starts at ₹48,000.
