Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), the country’s central bank, on Saturday announced that it will issue a new one rupee coin bearing a controversial map showing the areas of Limpiyadhura, Lipulekh and Kalapani, which are disputed with India.Kathmandu claims these areas as its own, while New Delhi says they are part of Uttarakhand and has said the issue should be resolved through bilateral talks.“NRB has not officially received the new design of the coin, but we are sure it will have the map,” spokesperson Guru Prasad Paudel said, according to PTI.“We will issue a new one rupee coin. However, its size and metal will be changed, making it smaller and lighter than the previous coin,” Paudel said.

On July 20, the Nepal government led by rapper-turned-politician Prime Minister Balendra Shah approved replacing the Nepal map on the coin with the image of a monastery.However, the government later decided to retain the map, reportedly following pressure from the opposition and the public.As part of the new design, the controversial political map was to be removed from the coin and replaced with the image of Lo Ghyakar Monastery in Marang village in Mustang district. This monastery is considered to be one of the oldest Buddhist monasteries of Nepal.The then KP Sharma Oli-led government included these areas in the official map of Nepal in May 2020.(With PTI inputs)
