San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie’s police protection squad was attacked on the edge of the city’s drug-ridden Tenderloin district Thursday evening, leaving one officer bleeding from the back of the head after a chaotic street confrontation.According to the New York Post, citing Mission Local, the mayor was not injured in the incident which occurred just before 6 p.m. near Cedar Street. The San Francisco Police Department said officers responded to the area of Cedar and Polk streets at about 5:38 p.m. and arrested two people. Two officers guarding the mayor suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening.A San Francisco Police Department officer guarding Lurie was left gasping and bleeding after hitting his head during a struggle with a suspect.Tony Phillips, who was booked on suspicion of murder in 2019 but never faced charges, was arrested in the incident.San Francisco County Jail booking logs show Phillips, 44, was taken into custody on suspicion of threatening an executive officer, possession of drug paraphernalia, petty theft, battery and assault on a police officer and resisting or obstructing an officer.According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Phillips was arrested in 2019 for allegedly fighting and stabbing a man in the Polk Gulch neighborhood, where he allegedly attacked Lurie’s security guard. The district attorney reportedly declined to charge Phillips, citing insufficient evidence. The mayor was traveling in a black SUV with an officer and a driver, including a policeman, when three men reportedly stopped the vehicle on the road. Lurie jumped out of the SUV and told the group to move, the injured officer told responding police. At first, all three appeared to be compliant, but the situation escalated when one of the men started making “unintelligible statements”, the officer said. When the officer came in and ordered the man to move forward, the suspect first backed away, then suddenly approached him.The officer grabbed the man’s upper body, but both fell to the ground during the scuffle. The constable fell backwards and hit his head on the pavement, leaving him bleeding.Meanwhile, Lurie’s driver, who was also a police officer, was working with another man at the scene. That officer was not injured. It remained unclear whether the second man attacked anyone, and the role of the third man mentioned by police also remained unclear. The suspected attacker was handcuffed at the scene and was repeatedly yelling, “F–k you!” As soon as the officers arrested him. A second suspect tried to escape but was caught by police a short distance away.More than a dozen officers stormed the block and surrounded the two suspects as they lay in handcuffs.Lurie watched the aftermath and was shaken by the incident before leaving the scene. The mayor told Mission Local that the men attempted to fight a police officer, but declined to provide further details.Lurie spokesman Charles Luttwak said, “There was an altercation this evening involving the mayor’s security. The mayor was not involved. We appreciate the quick response of our SFPD officers and the work they do to keep our city safe every day.”Louis Wong, president of the San Francisco Police Officers Association, praised the officers’ response.“We are grateful that the officers protecting the mayor acted quickly and courageously to protect him in a dangerous and unexpected situation,” Wong said.“We wish our injured officer a full and speedy recovery and commend everyone involved for their bravery and decisive action.”
