According to a New York Post reporter, the flames were extinguished within about a minute.“It started as a small fire and grew bigger. There was a lot of black smoke,” said Mohamed Shaaban, a 31-year-old Egyptian who witnessed the incident.“Four fireworks went off at the same time. The fire caused some additional fireworks to explode,” Khaula said.It was not immediately clear whether the bridge suffered any damage. According to the city fire department, two fire engines were sent to control the fire. Officials said such fires are not unexpected during fireworks displays, which is why spectators stay at a safe distance.Across the United States, Americans celebrated Independence Day with fireworks displays, parades, concerts and community events celebrating the country’s 250th anniversary.
