What is Shakshuka? And how to give it a Desi twist?
In simple terms, shakshuka is a North African dish that consists of boiled eggs and is usually enjoyed for breakfast. The name basically means ‘mixture’, where you sauté tomatoes and onions with spices, then boil eggs on top. It’s healthy, filling and extremely easy to make, which is why it has become popular in places like Israel, Libya, Morocco and Turkey. It’s even made its way to Spain, where they often add their local sausage, chorizo, to it.
But here’s where it gets interesting: we took the same onions, tomatoes and eggs and replaced the African spices with our own indigenous spices – turmeric, coriander, red chili powder and black pepper. And we used ghee instead of regular oil to enhance the flavor and nutrition. Sounds delicious, right? So what are you waiting for? Get your chef hat on, crack open some eggs and head to the kitchen.
Why is Desi Shakshuka a healthier option?
As we mentioned earlier, eggs are a storehouse of protein, minerals, vitamins and other essential nutrients. And by adding ghee, you boost the dish with healthy fats and carbohydrates that keep you energised all day long. Want to know more about the benefits of cooking with ghee? Click here.
