What is something that makes us cry and yet we reach for it every day? It’s onions! Onions are a rich source of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, and are widely used in various cuisines around the world. The best way to use onions is to figure out which variety you are buying. Different types of onions vary in appearance, pungency, sweetness, and a little texture. Knowing how to differentiate between yellow onions and sweet onions is important for any good cook. In a recent Instagram video, Cory Rodriguez (@healthwithcory) explained five different types of onions and their uses:
- yellow onion They have a very deep flavor and are almost inedible when raw, but when heated, their flavor and texture change. This is your go-to option for all kinds of cooking.
- white onion It has a crisper and tangy flavor that’s perfect for pasta, stir fries, or salsas.
- Sweet Onion It has a very sweet taste and because of the thick onion layers it is perfect for broths and especially for frying.
- Red Onion It has the mildest flavor. It is best eaten grilled as it doesn’t dry out, or can be eaten raw in things like guacamole or sandwiches and would be a great choice for pickling.
- Green onions It is mainly used as a garnish topping and works best with soups, stir fries, and even tacos.

However, a look at the comments section of this viral video reveals that the viewers don’t care much about the types of onions.
One wrote, “I cook with onions that are on sale.” Another said the same, “I buy the cheapest onions I can find.” A third wrote, “I make $11 an hour cooking with onions that are on special discount.”

While some people said they just buy the cheapest onions, others shared ideas based on their culture. One wrote, “As an Indian, we use red onions for everything” and another said, “As a Nigerian, red onions are good for everything.”
