In an effort to eat better, people tend to buy a lot of fruits and vegetables when they go for weekly grocery shopping. Most of us have also seen fruits and vegetables turn brown and wilted at the bottom of our refrigerators when we buy too much. However, there are some clever storage tips that can be used to help extend the shelf life of your food. In a video shared on Instagram, food vlogger Armen Edman explains some hacks to preserve your fruits and vegetables for longer. First, Edman takes watermelons and puts them in the fridge claiming that they will last for up to a month in cold temperatures. Next, he takes a bunch of grapes in a ziplock bag. After shaking them, he pokes a few holes in the ziplock and says to put it in the fridge. And then, he wraps lettuce in foil and puts it in the fridge claiming that it will stay fresh for the next 4 weeks. For bananas, wrap their stems with a paper towel and then cover it with foil. Keep it away from other fruits and it will stay fresh for up to 10 days.

To preserve avocados, store them in an airtight container filled with water and they will stay green for up to 3 weeks. Finally, he recommends not storing cucumbers in the fridge, but in a ziplock bag with holes and placing it on the counter. Lemons, on the other hand, work best in the fridge, just like cherries. Store potatoes in a basket in a dark and cool place away from sunlight. For strawberries, store them in a jar covered with a paper towel and keep them in the fridge. In a previous video, Armen Adamjan explained some more ways to store fruits and vegetables. He told everyone to store onions, garlic and shallots “in a dry and cool place outside the refrigerator.” Other instructions were to put asparagus and onions in a jar with water and cover it with a plastic bag. He promised that whoever follows this technique, they will stay fresh for 10 to 14 days.

The most important lesson from the video was to never store these two things together as they will eventually get spoiled. He also asked to avoid storing fruits like kiwi, apples and pears in the same place as they release ethylene gas, which spoils the fruits.
