Viral: Georgia Meloni gives Macron a death stare, shakes his hand in colder-than-Arctic weather

Tensions between Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and French President Macron, evident in a recent video of their handshake, arose over the inclusion of abortion rights language at the G-7 summit.

A video of a conversation between Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni and French President Emmanuel Macron is being widely shared on social media, showing tension between the two.

In the video, Meloni can be seen looking at Macron, and the two can be seen sharing a “very unpleasant” handshake, according to a draft seen by news agency Reuters. The video comes just hours after Meloni and Macron clashed over specific language on abortion rights. Earlier, the G-7 leaders made no direct reference to abortion in their final communique on Friday.

Italy refused to bow to French pressure to include the term, the report said.

The draft was also accused of weakening support for LGBTQ rights compared to the statement issued at the leaders’ previous meeting.

The abortion issue has sparked a diplomatic row between Rome and Paris, with Meloni accusing Macron of trying to score political points ahead of national elections in France.

Meanwhile, this was not the first time a politician’s eye-rolling antics have caught the internet’s attention.

In 2017, an explicit conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor Angela Merkel went viral, in which Merkel was seen glaring at Putin.

Putin, with one hand in his pocket and gesturing vigorously with the other, was discussing a topic that Merkel found less than interesting based on her reaction.

G-7 summit

According to Reuters, the G-7 draft statement upholds the commitment to “universal access to adequate, affordable and quality health services for women” that leaders made at their summit in Hiroshima, Japan, last year.

However, it removed a specific reference to the importance of “access to safe and legal abortion and post-abortion care” in the 2023 communiqué.

Italy, which is chairing the G-7 this year, said there was no need to repeat the language because it had reiterated its pledge specifically regarding Hiroshima.
