The teaser of director Varsha Bharath’s ‘Bad Girl’, which was presented and presented to Anurag Kashyap, has been removed from YouTube after the Madras High Court expressed problems with children and adolescents depicting children and adolescents. Varsha remarked, “I just wanted to write a character that was very reliable,” saying that “my film is not a self-help book.”
Despite the uproar, ‘Bad Girl’ has been received international praise, the Netpack Award at the 2025 International Film Festival of Rotterdam has received a young woman to portray a young woman. However, its bold themes are not sitting well with orthodox groups in India.
The teaser of the film released on January 26, 2025 criticized serious action from persons like S. Venkatesh, a lawyer. He argued that the teaser violated the POCSO Act and the Information Technology Act.
Filmmaker Pa Ranjith, who is not part of production, faced online backlash to support the film as “bold and refreshing”. Conversely, director Mohan ji criticized the film, saying, “Try with girls of his own caste and show it to his family first.”
The dispute around ‘Bad Girl’ outlines tension between artistic expression and cultural sensations in Tamil cinema. The film’s production is supported by famous filmmakers Wetrimaran and Anurag Kashyap, which highlights the high-profile nature of the controversy. His participation has given additional attention to the debate on the content of the film.
However, ‘Bad Girl’ approved the sensor barriers and a U/A certificate was issued. It was slated for a release on 5 September with Shivrathiqyan’s ‘Madharsi’. With the order of the new court, it is not clear that ‘Bad Girl’ will witness a smooth dramatic release in this September.
