US visa rejected: ‘Did you watch yesterday’s FIFA match?’

A Redditor shared his US visa interview (tourist visa) experience in Delhi.

A man seeks a tourist visa to the United States to watch the FIFA final. The visa officer asked him if he had watched last night’s match. The answer is negative. The visa officer then asks if he has seen any matches. The answer is again no. And there are no prizes for guessing that the applicant’s visa application has been rejected. A Redditor shared his visa interview experience at the Delhi Consulate, where his visa was approved, but he saw several rejections in front of him and pointed out how clearly those rejections were because the applicants were not sure about the purpose of their visit – like the sports fan who didn’t watch any matches but wanted to travel to the US to watch the final. The Redditor cited another case where the applicant said he wanted to spend 3 days in New York and 4 days in Chicago. He was asked why he chose New York. The applicant said ‘because it is famous’. Visa application rejected.Another person was rejected for the fourth time and it was such a harsh rejection that the officer told him not to apply again unless he had something new to add, the Redditor said. “He started arguing and pleading and eventually security kicked him out,” the Redditor said. The Redditor revealed his background that he is a software engineer in Bengaluru and has a monthly income of Rs 2 lakh. His father runs a well-established business and his family owns several properties. He is funding this American trip himself, where he wants to visit a friend in Seattle.“I want to go to Seattle. I plan to see Pike Place Market and Lake Union, and the highlight of the trip will be skydiving,” the Redditor said, giving a detailed plan of what he wants to do in Seattle. “Initially, I planned to move to Georgia, where my college friend was pursuing her master’s degree. She graduated and moved to Seattle, where she works as a software engineer,” the Redditor explained when asked why she chose to move to Seattle. The visa officer asked whether the friend was a fiance or a girlfriend. The Redditor said she was just a friend. The visa officer checked his international travel history, which included visits to Canada, Georgia and Azerbaijan.“Confidence matters a lot. Stay calm, answer honestly, don’t look frustrated and listen carefully to what is being asked. Give clear answers, match the officer’s communication style and maintain your composure throughout,” the Redditor gave his message from the interview.
