US State Department switching to OpenAI chatbots as agencies phase out Anthropic
The US State Department is reportedly changing the model powering its in-house chatbot, StateChat, from Anthropic to OpenAI. The Treasury Department is also ending all use of Anthropic products, including the cloud.
The US Treasury Department, State Department and Federal Housing Agency are ending all use of Anthropic products, with the State Department saying it will switch to rival OpenAI, after President Donald Trump ordered government agencies to dump Anthropic’s technology, including its cloud platform.
Trump on Friday directed the government to stop work with Anthropic, and the Pentagon said it would declare the AI startup a supply-chain risk, dealing a major blow to the artificial intelligence lab after a showdown over technology guardrails.

The Treasury Department is ending all use of anthropogenic products, including the cloud, Secretary Scott Besant said in a post on Twitter on Monday.
Federal Housing Finance Agency Director William Pulte also said in a post on Twitter that his department and U.S. mortgage agencies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are ending all use of anthropogenic products.
The US State Department is changing the model powering its in-house chatbot, StateChat, from Anthropic to OpenAI, according to a memo seen by Reuters.
“For now, StateChat will use GPT4.1 from OpenAI,” the memo said, adding that further information will be available later.
The State Department did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.
Trump said there would be a six-month phaseout for the Defense Department and other agencies that use Anthropic’s products.
These actions mark Washington’s extraordinary rebuke against one of the major companies that has kept the US at the forefront of national-security-critical AI. Anthropic could now become a pariah, a status previously reserved for enemy suppliers.
Late Friday, rival OpenAI announced its own deal to deploy the technology in the Defense Department’s classified networks.
