A British national has been widely praised online after rescuing a dehydrated bird in Delhi’s ongoing heatwave, drawing attention to the impact of extreme temperatures on urban wildlife.Nick Booker shared a video showing how he came across a distressed bird struggling in heat and rushed to help.In the footage, which was recorded during what he described as one of the hottest days of the year, the temperature in Delhi reached around 41 degrees Celsius.Booker said they found the bird – identified as a black kite – unable to walk due to dehydration.He wrote, “If it’s hot for us – it’s hot for them too! Many birds really suffer in heatwaves.”He is seen gently carrying the bird to the shade of a tree before giving it water, which it promptly drank.“On the hottest day of the year, here in Delhi it is 41 degrees, we are in the middle of a heat wave,” he said in the video.They also contacted wildlife rescue organization Wildlife SOS, which responded immediately.According to Booker, crews arrived within about 20 minutes to assist the bird.He thanked members of the organization for their quick response, saying: “Many thanks to @wildlifesos, especially Sanoj Chaurasia for taking my call and Pratap Singh for coming to the rescue!”The video has been widely praised online, with many users praising the quick response and highlighting the importance of helping animals during extreme weather conditions.The incident also pointed to widespread concern during the heat wave. Booker said rescue teams were dealing with a sharp increase in distress calls involving birds.He said that around 15 birds were rescued that day alone, whereas on normal days only two or three birds were rescued.Urging people to take simple steps to help, he said: “Please keep water on your balconies, on your rooftops, in front of your houses because birds really need to drink.”The video highlights the growing impact of rising temperatures on wildlife, as heatwave conditions continue to thrash parts of North India.
