What is Tomato Pappu?
In Telugu, “Pappu” translates to dal (lentils). This Andhra style tomato pappu recipe is a protein-rich dish that is packed with the tang of tomatoes and other main ingredients. This recipe is known for its simplicity and unique taste. Plus, it’s extremely versatile – you can make many variations of it at home using your favorite vegetables or leafy greens. Generally, pappu is made from toor dal and has many variations. However, Tomato Pappu is a classic recipe found in almost every Andhra household.
What can you pair with Tomato Pappu?
Like dal, this recipe is also a staple in Andhra households. You can pair this delicious pappu with jeera rice, steamed rice, or hot mango pickle to make a nutritious meal. It also pairs beautifully with fried vegetables. To experiment with flavours, you can add different types of pulses like moong or lentils to the recipe and make it your own.
How to make Andhra Tomato Pappu | Tomato Pappu Dal Recipe
It is very easy to make this delicious Tomato Pappu. This recipe has been shared by @chaispicekitchen on Instagram. to make it:
1. Prepare the lentils
Take one cup of tur or arhar dal and wash it thoroughly. Cover and soak the lentils for 30 minutes to soften them. After soaking, put the dal in a pressure cooker along with curry leaves, green chillies, onions, tomatoes, turmeric, chilli powder, salt and water. Pressure cook till 4-5 whistles. Let the steam escape naturally.
2. Prepare tadka
– Heat ghee in a tadka pan. Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, asafoetida, curry leaves, dry red chilli and crushed garlic. Mix well for 15 seconds and let the ingredients temper.
3. Mix the ingredients
Add cooked dal in the same pan and mix everything together. Mash the dal lightly and let it boil for a minute. Garnish with green coriander and serve hot!
Pro Tip:
To enhance its taste and spiciness, you can also add a little tamarind extract to your homemade pappu and enhance its taste.
