Tiktok was fined 530 million euros ($ 600 million) by its major European Union’s privacy regulator on Friday as to how it protects user information and China was ordered to suspend data transfer if its processing is not brought to compliance within six months.
Ireland’s Data Protection Commissioner (DPC) said that Ticketkok, owned by China’s bidence, failed to show that the personal data of the European Union users, some of which have been accessed by employees from far away, was borne by the European Union law.
As a result, the short-video platform did not address the possible access to data by Chinese authorities, in which the data under other laws identified by Tikok was physically deviative by the European Union standards, the DPC said in a statement.
Tikok said that it has firmly discovered and used its legal structure of the European Union, especially to give so -called standard contractual segments, tightly controlled and limited remote access. It is planning to make an appeal.
It has also been stated that this decision fails to fully consider the first data security measures in 2023 to monitor remote access independently and ensure that the European Union user data is stored in dedicated data centers in Europe and the United States.
Tikok, which has increased rapidly among teenagers worldwide in recent years and has 175 million users across Europe, said it has never received requests from Chinese authorities for European Union user data, and they have never provided data to them.
Tikok said in a statement, “This ruling risk sets an example with far -reaching consequences for companies and entire industries across Europe, which works globally.”
The DPC also found that when Tiktok said during a four -year investigation that it did not store the European Union user data on the server in China, it revealed last month that it revealed in February that a limited amount was stored in China and when being removed.
DPC Deputy Commissioner Graham Doyle said, “DPC is taking these recent developments very seriously. We are considering that further regulatory action can be taken.”
This is the second time Tiktok has been reprimanded by DPC. In 2023, a fine of 345 million euros was imposed in 2023 to dissolve the privacy laws about the processing of children’s personal data in the European Union.
Due to its regional headquarters location in Ireland, the major regulator in the European Union for many top technical firms, powerful Irish privacy regulator, has also fined the choice of Microsoft (MSFT.O), opens new tabincadine, opening new tabs, X and meta (meta), which was approved.
Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) of the European Union, including Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway in the European Economic Zone’s member states, the major regulators for any company can impose a fine of up to 4% of their global revenue.
