Anurag Kashyap, who recently turned a year older, has never worked with Shah Rukh Khan even though they studied in the same institution. Anurag studied Zoology at Hansraj College, Delhi University in the 90s while Shah Rukh graduated in Economics from there in 1988. The filmmaker believes that Shah Rukh has an aura that he will not be able to live up to. There was also a time when Anurag Kashyap went to Shah Rukh’s Mannat to satiate his hunger and told him that Shah Rukh knows how to make an omelette.
In an old interview with Midday in 2020, Anurag Kashyap recalled the incident of feeling hungry at Shah Rukh Khan’s house Mannat. It is interesting to know that Shah Rukh fed him an omelette.
“I went to Shah Rukh Khan’s house using my college contacts. I remember he fed me. He only knew how to make omelettes. I have done similar things,” the filmmaker had said at the time.
Anurag shed light on his struggling days in the 90s when he was standing outside the sets of Shah Rukh’s 1998 film Duplicate. The Gangs of Wasseypur director recalled that he used to pick up director Mahesh Bhatt’s books when he was hungry and had no money. Recalling that he knew Shah Rukh since his university days, the filmmaker was not intimidated by his presence.
The Bad Cop actor recalled meeting the late producer Yash Johar, who “sensed” his hunger on the sets. The veteran producer had asked the then struggling filmmaker to have food. Calling him “kind and wonderful”, Anurag recalled that he took the Kennedy director aside and fed him food.
Coming back to why Anurag Kashyap and Shah Rukh Khan never worked in films, the director had once told Humans of Cinema that he is “terrified of fans of big stars”. Anurag admitted that he would never be able to live up to Shah Rukh’s aura. The Gulaal director said that he would only have the “dare” to work with King Khan once his 2016 film Fan becomes a success.
Talking about work, Anurag Kashyap last directed Kennedy in 2023. As an actor, he appeared in the series Bad Cop this year. Shah Rukh Khan has Sujoy Ghosh’s King in the pipeline, co-starring Suhana Khan and Abhishek Bachchan.
