The True Origin of Tequila: Where is Tequila Originally Made?Agave: The Heart and Soul of TequilaThe unexpected benefits of tequilaHow to Enjoy Tequila Like a Pro

Tequila, the fiery liquor synonymous with celebratory shots, has its own day of honor — International Tequila Day (also known as National Tequila Day), celebrated every July 24. But beyond the party atmosphere is a rich history, a unique production process and surprising depth of flavor just waiting to be explored. So, raise your glass (responsibly, of course) as we explain its true origins, history, key ingredients and the best ways to enjoy this iconic drink.

The True Origin of Tequila: Where is Tequila Originally Made?

Prinkesh Singh, Senior Head Mixologist at Kembara BKC, told us, “The story of tequila is an old one! Long ago, even before the Spaniards came, people in Mexico called the Aztecs made a drink called pulque from a special spiky plant called agave. When the Spaniards came in the 1500s, they came up with a new way of making the drink! They used this special way (called distilling) with the agave plant, and thus tequila was born! Today, real tequila can only be made in certain parts of Mexico, specifically a place that has a pretty awesome name – Tequila!”

Jishnu AJ, head mixologist at Aka, explains, “Tequila originated in the region surrounding the town of Tequila, located in the western state of Jalisco in Mexico. Its history dates back to pre-Hispanic times, when locals fermented the sap of the agave plant to create a drink called pulque. However, the modern version of tequila began with the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century. They began distilling agave to create a stronger spirit, which evolved into today’s tequila. Officially, to be named tequila it must be produced in specific regions of Mexico, primarily Jalisco.”

Agave: The Heart and Soul of Tequila

Tequila’s unique character stems from its main ingredient – the blue agave plant (Agave tequilana Weber). With its spiky leaves and heart called the “piña” (pineapple), this succulent plant takes a remarkable seven to ten years to mature. Once harvested, the piñas are roasted in the oven, releasing their sugars. These sugars are then extracted and fermented using yeast, turning them into alcohol.
The magic of tequila lies in the strict regulations governing its production. Unlike mezcal, its smoky cousin, tequila can only be produced in certain regions of Mexico, primarily the town of Tequila in Jalisco and limited areas in neighboring states. Additionally, tequila must be made with at least 51% blue agave, with some premium brands boasting 100% agave for an even more authentic experience.

The unexpected benefits of tequila

While tequila is often associated with drinking alcohol, it has some surprising potential benefits if consumed responsibly. Agave, which is its base ingredient, is a natural source of prebiotics, which may contribute to gut health. Additionally, studies show that moderate tequila consumption may improve insulin sensitivity and may also aid in weight management.
According to Prinkesh Singh, tequila can stimulate digestion and act as a prebiotic, which is good for your gut. Tequila has fewer calories and sugar than other spirits. Some people find that a small amount of tequila can help you relax and sleep better.
Jishnu AJ explains that pure tequila has less sugar than many other alcoholic beverages! Now that’s what we all wanted to know!

However, it is important to remember that these potential benefits only apply when consumed in moderation. Excessive consumption can lead to the well-known (and so unpleasant) side effects of alcohol.

How to Enjoy Tequila Like a Pro

Tequila is more than just a party shot (though it can certainly be enjoyed that way too!). To truly understand its depth, enjoy it with more than just salt and lime. Here’s how to enjoy tequila like a pro:

  • The right temperature: Unlike vodka, tequila can be enjoyed at room temperature or slightly chilled. This allows the subtle flavors to come out.
  • Embrace the variations: Tequila comes in different varieties based on its aging process. Blanco (silver) tequila is unaged and offers a bright, agave-forward flavor. Reposado (rested) is aged in oak barrels for two to twelve months, developing a smoother, more complex character. Añejo (aged) tequila is aged for at least three years, providing deeper oak notes and a richer flavor.
  • Try different cocktails: Tequila isn’t just for shots. Try classic tequila cocktails like the Margarita (tequila, lime juice and Cointreau) or the Paloma (tequila, grapefruit soda and lime juice). For a sophisticated twist, try the Picante, which consists of tequila, lime juice, chili peppers and agave nectar.

So, this Tequila Day, gather your friends, explore the diverse world of tequila, and celebrate its spirit with a “salad” (cheers!).
