US President Donald Trump on Sunday supported expanding proposed Russia sanctions legislation to include Iran and urged Republican lawmakers to expand the scope of the bill.“Republicans should add Iran to the Russia sanctions bill. This is what Lindsay wanted to do and this is what was going to happen. IMPORTANT!!!” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.Earlier, Trump said he “couldn’t care less” about Iran’s decision to stop abiding by the US-Iran Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and reiterated that Washington’s priority is to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons, according to Al Jazeera.Trump’s remarks referred to the “Sanctioning Russia Act,” legislation originally supported by the late U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham.A bipartisan group of more than 60 US senators introduced a revised version of the bill on Thursday (local time), replacing an earlier proposal of sweeping tariffs with targeted sanctions aimed at the world’s biggest buyers of Russian energy.The legislation, titled “Senator Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia Act of 2026”, was introduced by Senators Jeanne Shaheen, Richard Blumenthal, and Darlene Graham. It wants to hold major buyers of Russian oil and gas accountable for supporting Moscow’s war in Ukraine.According to the bill’s sponsors, Graham met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky last week and won White House approval for the revised draft before his death. Graham and Blumenthal first introduced the ban proposal in April 2025.The amended bill “reduces the tariff authority from a blanket 500 percent tariff to impose tariffs on the top five buyers of Russian crude oil and natural gas up to 100 percent,” while creating an exception for countries importing less than 15 percent of Russia’s natural gas exports if they are taking significant steps to reduce those imports.The updated legislation “adds new authority to impose tariffs up to 100 percent on the top five countries facilitating Russian oil sanctions evasion,” “updates the exemptions to require national interest certification consistent with other sanctions laws,” “includes the bipartisan SHADOW Fleet Sanctions Act targeting Russia’s sanctions-evading fleet,” and “includes the bipartisan STOP Russia-China Act targeting Chinese support for Russia’s defense industrial base.”“Trump previously supported the sanctions bill in January, which included measures targeting countries that continue to buy Russian oil.
