The Odyssey first review: Christopher Nolan’s epic hailed as a supreme achievement
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has received rave reviews ahead of its July 17 release, with many calling it the director’s finest work. While most praised its scale and visuals, some viewers felt the epic was slow and overlong.

Following the initial screening, there was a flood of reactions on social media, with many praising Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s epic as a cinematic triumph.

Another wrote, “The Odyssey is Christopher Nolan’s crowning achievement. He’s fully committed to the myth and it’s unlike anything he’s made before. This movie is weird, stunningly beautiful, and the cast is doing the best work of their careers. Do everything you can to see it in IMAX 70MM (sic).”
However, not all reactions were encouraging. One viewer wrote, “#TheOdyssey I just finished watching TheOdyssey and it felt extremely dull and drawn out. The performances were great but Tom Holland was easily the weakest for me. I was hoping this would be a role where he could show his range but it didn’t work out. Not much else to say, just disappointed.”
Another response said, “I watched The Odyssey last week…It’s Christopher Nolan’s most straightforward film yet – and probably his most impressive, too. Both the epic scale and the attention to detail are absolutely stunning. The closest comparison I can think of is Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy.”
Another viewer wrote, “The Odyssey is not only one of Nolan’s finest films (possibly “the very best”), but it is also one of the best films of the genre – and in fact, one of the greatest films in the history of cinema.” You have to see it to believe it.”





The film is set to release in theaters on July 17. Ahead of its release, Nolan and the cast have been promoting odyssey through a global press tour. After attending the London premiere on Monday, the team is scheduled to visit Paris, Mumbai, New York, Beijing and Seoul.

Nolan and cinematographer Hoyte Van Hoytema also used newly developed lightweight IMAX cameras, which were designed to overcome the traditional size and logistical limitations of the format.
The film stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, Tom Holland as Telemachus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Robert Pattinson as Antinous, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, Himesh Patel, Mia Goth, John Leguizamo, Jon Bernthal and Benny Safdie, among others.
