The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare features Guy Ritchie’s signature style. Featuring confident and charming protagonists, the film takes viewers back to World War II, where Ritchie adapted Damian Lewis’ 2014 book, Churchill’s Secret Warriors: The Explosive True Story of the Special Forces Desperadoes of WWII.
Henry Cavill plays Gus March-Phillips, a real man who led a daring mission called Operation Postmaster. Its goal was to disable the Nazi naval fleet. The film focuses on March-Phillips’ black-ops team’s mission to steal two Italian cargo ships suspected of spying for the Axis powers. These ships were located on Fernando Po (now Bioko), a Spanish-controlled island that could serve as a neutral base for enemy forces.
In the film, the stakes are raised, and historical facts are exaggerated for dramatic effect. The success of the mission did not have as much of an impact on the outcome of the war as depicted in the film. While the real Operation Postmaster disrupted Axis supply lines, the film presents it as a turning point in the war.
The film follows Gus, who is recruited by Brigadier Gubbins (Cary Elwes) to form a covert team. British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, desperate to break the Nazi blockade of British waters, approves the secret mission.
Gus’ plan is to blow up the Italian ship Duchessa and two tugboats. If he succeeds, this will disrupt the Axis supply chain and give Britain an opening to attack. However, if captured, Gus and his team will be ostracized and sentenced to death.
The team consists of a diverse group: explosives expert Freddy; Gus’s assistant Henry; Marjorie (Eiza González) and Herron, who are undercover agents; and Anders (Alan Ritchson), who is a weapons expert. Their missions include infiltrating a Nazi camp, cutting off power, and sabotaging boats.
The plan encounters complications when a spy alerts the Nazis, prompting them to strengthen their security. Gus and his team have to adapt quickly, including a daring nighttime raid to steal a boat.
The film’s climax features intense action on both land and sea. After successfully hijacking and sabotaging boats, Gus’s team faces one final challenge: escaping while surviving and avoiding capture.
In the end, Churchill pardons the team, recognizing their bravery and contributions. They become a special unit for dangerous missions where conventional forces cannot reach. The film ends with a glimpse of their continued service, with Marjorie eventually becoming a movie star and marrying Gus.
Despite the finality of the story, given the success of the film and the interest in the characters and their mission, there could be room for a sequel or spin-off.
