The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond took a good start at the Indian box office, earning Rs. Approx Rs 5.50 crore nett. Out of this Rs. The limited show on Friday evening earned around Rs 75 lakh, while Rs. The net added on Saturday was around Rs 4.75 crore. Although Saturday was technically the second day of release, the film had to face legal hurdles before then. The Kerala High Court had stayed its release on Thursday, and the order was reversed on Friday, allowing the show to start in the evening. Because of this delay, Saturday actually became the actual Inauguration Day.
The Kerala Story, released in 2023, was a blockbuster. That film made Rs. 6.75 crore nett and approx Rs. Collected. Rs 225 crore in its entire performance. It was labeled as a promotional film, and to be honest, it was more on the surface rather than being subtle about it. Having said that, the bottom line is that the film’s content found a good amount of viewers, especially in the Hindi belt. There was a quip in trade circles about how the film actually played like an educational film in some parts of the country.
All this applies to this sequel as well. Despite having no face value, it’s got a head start, which means the IP has some value. These films with a definite political bent have fallen slightly from their peak in early 2020. The Bengal Files declined after the blockbuster success of The Kashmir Files. Something similar could have happened with this film too, which it has avoided.
The original film had a very strong box office performance, which is unlikely to be repeated, although you never know with these types of films. That said, there really is no need to repeat it. Dhurandhar has an open corridor for the film until Toxic arrives on March 2 and 19. If it gets traction from its target audience, it may continue to do well and survive at the box office.
