Super Mario Galaxy Movie is an upcoming animated feature film that brings the world of video games to the big screen. The sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, it brings back Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key and Kevin Michael Richardson in their voice roles for their beloved characters. Ahead of the film’s release on April 1, 2026, actor Charlie Day spoke exclusively to Pinkvilla about embodying Luigi once again through voice acting.
Charlie Day explains why it was special to voice Luigi again in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
Sharing his experience about why Luigi hit home for him, Charlie Day said, “Luigi has that underdog sensibility. With Mario, you get the classic hero who runs toward danger to save the day. With Luigi, you have the guy who says, ‘I want to save the day, but I also don’t want to get hurt,’ and I think that makes him relatable. His innocence is something you appreciate, Because he loves his brother so much that he can follow him anywhere.
For a 50-year-old man, it’s believing that the world of Super Mario, a game that has ruled living room TVs and countless consoles for decades. More specifically, it is Luigi’s genuineness that makes him more likable, with Starr saying, “Luigi is a guy who sees the good in everyone.” Listing the good parts of the character, he said, “He believes that everyone is forgivable and that they have the ability to be compassionate and overcome their past mistakes. There is something powerful about a character that says, ‘Someone can be bad, but that doesn’t mean they’ll always be bad.'”
The Super Mario Galaxy movie, meanwhile, picks up from the end of The Super Mario Bros. movie. Yoshi is introduced into the story and joins forces with brothers, Mario and Luigi, as well as Princess Peach and Toad, as the flock travels with Rosalina to outer space to fight Bowser and his son, Bowser Jr.
The cast includes Benny Safdie, Donald Glover, Issa Rae, Luis Guzman and Brie Larson in significant roles.
