Actor Samantha Ruth Prabhu joined the growing list of stars supporting new age Telugu cinema. His debut production, ‘Supham’, directed by ‘Cinema Bandhi-Fame Praveen Kandreugula’, is aimed at distributing a little significant to a bit important yet, which holds light, slightly absurd tale on the topics contained in everyday social comments. The promotional material deployed the film as a bizarre horror-comedy with a complicated concept. While the film broadly meets that promise, treatment is not completely new.

The idea of real -life, harassing a television serial, is first detected, especially in ’13B ‘, starring Madhavan and directed by Vikram Kumar. But unlike that film, ‘Suham’ takes a more playful, comic route, touching various subjects. It cannot excavate very deeply, but it lives with its simplicity, innocence and inherent humor.

Set in the Sleeping Costal Town of Vishakpatnam, ‘Subham’ follows three youths who navigate their ideas of manhood. As Srinivas prepares for his marriage, their already married friends feed them the old beliefs of manhood, self-declared “alpha” behavior, and how to ‘handle’ confused women. But things take a strange turn on the wedding night. The fictional television serial ‘Janma Janmala Bandam’, which his wife is watching, begins to influence real life. Thus satire is a bizarre mixture of comedy and supernatural mischief.

This is a base that seems to be outlandish, but in the hands of director Praveen Kandreguula, it never goes to overboard. In fact, ‘Subham’ is surprisingly tender. The director is very much liked in his debut ‘cinema captive’, innocence and the heat of the small town. They live in storytelling. Humor is not the kind of humor that bursts you laughing, but it keeps smiling to you. Jokes are status, letters are familiar, and conflicts are strangely reliable.

The option to use daily soap as a supernatural trigger is both clever and culturally suitable. Telugu’s houses have long been affected by daily serials, especially for women, where imagination and reality often feel mixed. ‘Subham’ rotates this idea, not to make fun of it, but to show how deep the patriarch can be, even among those who mean well. The film talks very serious or without publicity.

Vasant Maryiganti’s writing brings both the numerous and the message with some flair. Dialogues are funny and natural, if the number is very high in. A funny dosa scene between a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, and the first meeting has a conversation about water tanks and their quality that still manage to say something meaningful.

But despite having many cute moments, the second half increases slightly, especially when the characters try to find out what is happening. Passing dips, and some visual repetition feel. The film could have been tight with low runtime.

Samantha deserves credit for supporting such concept-thunder film in his first outing as a producer. The production values from Trolla Moving Pictures are solid and are correct for the tone of the film. However, his cameo is strangely placed. She looks stunning, but does not intend to strange ways and styling. He said, in other surprises, the cameos mix well and add it to fun. The horror elements cannot distribute perfectly to the intimidating factor, but makeup and CG (Computer Graphics) departments have done a clear job. The film works more as a comedy set against a scary background, compared to a true horror-comedy, and makes it deliberately feel.

The film has a mixture of comedy, horror and satire. Even if the mixture is not right across, the effort seems honest. The climax brings all this together in a sweet and simple way, using the same TV serial that creates confusion. It avoids going to overboard and ends on a warm note.

Among the actors, Harsith Reddy makes the strongest impression. His comic timing and screen appearance put the film together. Shriya Kontham shines in emotional moments. The rest of the actors fits well with the film’s world. The technical side lives within its limit. The music of Vivek Sagar adds a good touch, especially in the background score.

‘Suham’ is a light, bizarre horror comedy with a good heart. It does not try to take itself very seriously, and it works in its favor. Lightly, in a place filled with big batsmen, it seems a small, simple and refreshing.

3.5 out of 5 stars for ‘Suham’.
