A Palestinian teenager, who was killed in an Israeli jail, was a major cause of starvation, who used to observe the autopsy according to an Israeli doctor.
Seventeen -year -old Walid Ahmed, who was held for six months without accusations, was suffering from extreme malnutrition, and also showed signs of colon and itching inflammation, Dr. A report written by Daniel Solomon, who saw the body test conducted by Israeli experts at the request of the boy’s family.
Associated Press received a copy of Solomon’s report from the family. It did not eliminate one of the causes of death, but said that Ahmed was in a state of excessive weight loss and muscle waste. It was also noted that Ahmed had complained to the prison of at least from December, citing the report from the Jail Medical Clinic.
Palestinian officials, citing eyewitness accounts of other prisoners, said that Ahmed died last month after falling in Megido jail and attacking his head. Israel’s jail service said that a team was appointed to investigate Ahmed’s death and its findings would be sent to authorized officers.
According to physicians for Human Rights Israel, the Gaza is the youngest Palestinian prisoner to die in the Israeli prison since the onset of the war, who has documented the death of a Palestinian prisoner. His family said that he was taken into custody from his home at the West Bank occupied during the pre-colored raids in September.
The Autopsy was held on 27 March at the Abu Kabir Forensic Institute in Israel, which has not released its findings and not responded to the remarks requests. Ahmed family lawyer, Nadia Dakka, confirmed a gastrointestinal surgeon Solomon, was allowed to inspect the body examination by an Israeli Civil Court.
Widespread abuse in Israeli jails, rights groups say
The rights groups have documented widespread misuse in the Israeli detention facilities, holding thousands of Palestinians, which were scored after Hamas on October 7, 2023, the attack lit the war in the Gaza Strip. The Palestinian Authority says that Israel is catching the bodies of 72 Palestinian prisoners, who died in Israeli jails, including 61, who died since the onset of the war. Israel is often cited for the bodies of dead Palestinians, citing security base, or political rivalry.
The situation in Israeli jails has deteriorated since the onset of the war, former prisoners have told AP. He described beating, severe crowds, insufficient medical care, itching outbreaks and poor sanitary conditions.
Megido Gel, a maximum security facility where several Palestinian prisoners, including teenagers, are considered the most rigorous, Nazi Abbas, head of prisoners and heads of prisoners among doctors for Human Rights Israel.
Israel’s jail service said that it operates according to the law and all prisoners are given basic rights.
Ahmed’s lawyer, Firas al-Jabini said that Israeli officials denied their requests to meet their clients in jail, but the three prisoners held there told him that Ahmed had serious diarrhea, vomiting, headache and dizziness before dying. He suspected that it was due to dirty water, as well as the guards of Paneer and Dahi Jail and stayed all day, while the Muslims of the captive Ramadan were fasting for the holy month, the lawyer said.
Malnutrition
Dr. According to Solomon’s report, the body examination showed that Ahmed’s probability was suffering from inflammation of the large intestine, a condition known as colitis that can cause frequent diarrhea and in some cases contribute to death.
But medical experts stated that colitis usually does not cause death in young patients and was possibly increased by severe malnutrition.
“He was suffering from starvation, causing severe malnutrition and in combination with untreated colitis, dehydration and electrolyte levels were disturbed, which could cause cardiovascular abnormalities and death,” Dr. Leena Kasem Hasan said, the head of the board for doctors for human rights reported on AP’s request.
He said that findings indicated medical neglect, which has increased with Ahmed’s illness or infection to fight infection because he was so malnourished and weak.
Professor of Forensic Medicine at Oslo University in Norway, Dr. Arne Strey-Pederson, who was not included in the body examination, said the report stated that the duration of malnutrition and disease lasted for at least a few weeks or months. “Based on the report, I explain the underlying cause of death,” he said.
The report said that scabi rashes were also noted on their feet and genital areas. There was also air between his lungs which had expanded to his neck and back, it said, which could lead to infection. The air can come with small tears in the lungs, which can be caused by severe vomiting or cough, it said.
Ahmed’s family said he was a healthy high schooler who enjoyed playing football before taking custody. His father, Khalid Ahmed, said that his son sat through four brief court hearing by Videoconference, and he saw one of them in February, that his son appeared in poor health.
The family has not yet received the death certificate from Israel, the elder Ahmed said on Friday, and hoping that Dr. Solomon’s report will help bring his son’s body home.
“We will ask for burying our son’s body,” he said “what is happening in Israeli jails is a real tragedy, because there is no value for life.”
