Sri Lankan family faces deportation despite mother’s UK visa extension: Children must leave | world News

A Sri Lankan family living legally in Britain has been told its children must leave.

A Sri Lankan family living legally in Britain has been told that their two young children will have to leave the country despite their mother being allowed to stay until 2031, according to a report in The Guardian. The case involves Varuni Arachige, a care worker living in Perth, Scotland, whose visa has been extended by the Home Office. However, her husband and two children, aged eight and five, have reportedly been instructed to leave the UK despite being in the country legally from 2022.Arachige told The Guardian that the family followed immigration rules, paid visa fees and taxes and set up their life in Scotland, where the children go to school.“We have been living in the UK legally since we arrived here on Christmas Day 2022,” he said.“The Home Office has extended my visa until 2031. But my husband and children who depend on me have been asked to leave the country.”The family arrived in Britain under visa rules allowing foreign care workers to bring partners and children as dependents. Those rules were tightened in March 2024 as part of broader government efforts to reduce migration. The case has raised concerns because the family entered Britain before restrictions came into effect.Another Sri Lankan care worker, Rasika Samarasinghe, said that his wife and three children were also refused permission to stay with family despite following immigration requirements.“We have done everything legally in this country and we have paid every tax,” Samarasinghe said.“All my children are well settled and doing well in school. The youngest speaks and writes only English.”Responding to the issue, a Home Office spokesperson said the government is moving ahead with plans to reduce migration and reform the legal immigration system.“We will always welcome those who contribute to this country and want to build a better life here. But we must restore order and control at our borders,” the spokesman said.
