The joke on a few years ago was that Google would eventually add a separate messaging service to all its apps, no matter how little it is understood. The search giant thanked that idea, but Spotify here is to make it live in a way.
Streaming giants only announced messages, which – you guess – is a message service that is in the right place. Why? According to Spotify, users have stated that “they want a dedicated place inside the app to share songs, podcasts, or audiobooks, they are excited with friends and family, and an easy way to keep a track of recommendations”.
So this is how the messages were born. This week will start rolling out for both free users and premium customers “in select markets” 16 years and older, but interestingly only on mobile devices.

The messages in Spotify are only one-on-one, unlike the application above, where you can also share the goods in groups (and can chat). You can share the spotify content and start a message with those who interact with the first through spotify. Otherwise, you have to use a message request system.
When you are listening to a song, podcast, or audibook, you can tap the share icon, select a friend, and send them. To reach the new message section of Spotify, go to your profile photo in the top left corner. Thankfully you can ignore it and continue sharing materials on other platforms like before – you can also choose out of messages completely through settings. The message on Spotify “designed to supplement these integrations, not replace them”, the company says.
When it comes to privacy, it is complex. Spotify says that the interaction is “protected with industry-standard encryption” when data “is stored and when it is on step”. However, “Spotify will use proactive detection techniques to scan messages for some illegal and harmful materials”, and its mediator will review that material.
