Filmmaker Spike Lee has defended michaelA musical biopic on ‘King of Pop’ Michael Jackson, starring his nephew Jafar Jackson in the lead role, is underway amid criticism that it does not include child abuse allegations against the late singer.

Lee, in an interview with cnnSaid film, directed by Antoine Fuqua, ends in 1988 and does not cover the period in which the allegations emerged.

He said, “First of all, if you’re a film critic, and you’re complaining about other things – but the movie ends at ’88. The thing you’re talking about, the allegations, happens later.”

“So you’re criticizing the film all you want, but it doesn’t work in the timeline of the film. But people showed up. All over the world, people showed their love,” the filmmaker continued.

Lee also said he was reminded of Jackson, who died in 2009 at the age of 50 due to acute propofol intoxication, a condition caused by excessive intake or abuse of a fast-acting intravenous anesthetic called propofol.

He said, “I miss Mike. I miss Prince. I mean, these are my brothers. I’ve worked with both of them. Both are beautiful, beautiful people.”

In another interview with deadline, michael Director Antonio Fuqua also commented on the decision not to include the abuse excerpts in the biopic. He clarified that the production team intends to address that chapter of the story in the next project.

Fuqua explained that the primary goal was to foster empathy by presenting a more complete picture of the human being behind the fame, while acknowledging that no person is innocent.

By exploring the influences that shaped Jackson’s personality, he said he intended to lay a foundation for the narrative directions planned for the second film.

In 2003, Jackson faced seven counts of child molestation and two counts of drugging a minor, although he denied all charges and was acquitted in 2005. After his death in 2009, additional accused came forward with further allegations.
