Sonam Kapoor talks about the Seemantonnayan ceremony and why the ritual is still important

Sonam Kapoor performed the sacred Seemantonnayana ritual, marking the birth of her child and expressed her gratitude for the support of her loved ones and the craftsmanship behind her traditional attire.

Sonam Kapoor’s baby shower was more than a celebration, it was a deeply cultural moment rooted in tradition, love and community. The actor recently shared glimpses of his Seemantonnayan ceremony, offering a heartfelt reflection on the ritual and the people who made it special.

Seemantonnayana, considered the third of the sixteen sacred rites In Sanatana Dharma, it is traditionally performed to bless the mother and her unborn child. Often referred to as the hair-parting ritual, it goes by different names across India, including Godbharai, Srimanta and Seemantam, but, as Sonam said, its essence is the same: a celebration of love, protection and new life.

Sharing her thoughts, Sonam expressed her gratitude for being surrounded by people close to her during the ceremony. “This ancient ritual felt even more meaningful because all of my best friends in the world came for me. My entire family did too. I felt so tied up,” she wrote, capturing the emotional weight of the day.

The actor also thanked his mother, mother-in-law and sister for organizing the ceremony, and said that their efforts made him feel deeply cherished and honored. Sonam’s post not only highlighted the ritual but also the spirit of togetherness that defines the occasion.

Earlier in the week, Sonam had also talked about her custom outfit designed by Shehla for the festivities. Describing the look, she shared, “This look was created with so much love. Shehla created this soft stool custom dress for me – hand-painted, hand-embroidered, and crafted with the kind of care that only comes from deep understanding and trust.”

She acknowledged the unwavering support of her sister Rhea Kapoor and designer Shehla. He wrote, “Shehla, grateful beyond words to you and my sister Rhea, who has always stood by me unconditionally.”

Reflecting on the collective effort behind both the ceremony and her look, Sonam summed it up: “It really does take a village, and I’m extremely grateful for mine.”

Announcing her second pregnancy in November 2025, Sonam shared a picture in a hot-pink suit and captioned it, “Mom.” She married businessman Anand Ahuja in 2018, and the couple welcomed their first child, Vayu, in August 2022.

Talking about the work front, Sonam was last seen in the film 2023. BlindHindi remake of the Korean thriller of the same name.
