Shangun season 2 is moving forward as co-producer Justin Marx confirms that the script has been officially completed. The FX Historical Drama, based on James Clavel’s novel, was initially planned as a limited series, but was renewed for two more sessions after its success.
Speaking to the deadline at the Critics Choice Awards, Marx revealed that the authors’ room is over, and the production plan is now going on.
“We are now coming out of the authors’ room. We are also with 10 episodes, and now we have our closing. It is allowing us to find out how we are going to shoot it, “Marx said. He also teased that season 2 would begin with some unexpected twist.
Marx indicated that the second season would be surprised from the beginning. He said, “I think that taking away from anything is that, I hope that people will be surprised by some big ideas of the first episode of Part 2.”
Shagun season 1 closely followed Clavel’s book, focusing on the English sailor John Blackthorn (Cosmo Jarvis) and the powerful Demyo Lord Tornaga (Heroyuki Saanada).
However, due to no other novel as a direct source, season 2 is expected to introduce a new storyline. Marx also mentioned that he is considering future stories, which may indicate in possible seasons beyond the already confirmed season 3.
The return of Heroyuki Sanada, who plays the role of Lord Tornaaga, is confirmed and is also included as a manufacturer. The Creative Team is working closely with them to ensure historical and cultural accuracy, priority in season 2.
FX has not yet announced that members of other artists will return, but expect more updates as expected of production. Given the success of the first season, the creators of the show are likely to be careful in maintaining the high standard set by the series.
With the completion of the script, the next step is planning for production. Marx did not confirm a filming schedule, but season 1 took a year to shoot due to its detailed historical settings and practical effects. Season 2 will require a uniform timeline, which means the release date is still uncertain.
