Even after more than three decades, Shah Rukh Khan’s depiction of Rahul’s 1993 film Dar continued the discussion. While some consider it one of the most powerful performances of SRK, others have criticized the film for passion and chasing. Now, the film’s author, Honey Irani shared her perspective, has exposed Rahul’s mental state and defended the character’s creative options in crafting.
In an interview with Friday Talkies, Irani opened the notorious “KK-Kiran” moment, which became a symbol of Rahul’s passion. He explained that Rahul’s stutter was not just one character bizarre, but did not reflect his inner fear and vulnerability. According to her, not out of her voice, but because she was scared and overwhelmed emotionally. “Even when he said his name, he would be so scared that he would stutter,” he shared, suggesting that Rahul’s rejection and fear of deep psychological instability were the main for his character depiction.
Irani emphasized that Rahul was never written as lust-powered sexual hunters. Instead, he described him as someone who really believed that he was in love. Pointing to a major scene in the film, he said that Rahul had opportunities to physically harm Kiran, but did not take action on him. Irani said, “Otherwise, when he was on a boat, he could rape her, but it was not,” Irani said, “This restraint was deliberately and love had to be separated from lust.”
He explained in detail that both he and Yash Chopra were careful not to portray Rahul’s passion only as a physical desire. He wanted the audience to understand that Rahul, though dangerously misled, looked at himself as someone in love. The film was written to express his distorted but honest feelings, including his words, marriage promises and plans to introduce Kiran to his mother.
However, Irani did not address more disturbing aspects of Rahul’s behavior – he repeatedly disregarded harassment, violent tendency, and Kiran’s consent and safety. Today’s audience is more important about such illustrations, and many believe that the film romantic the vision of a hunter under the guise of love.
Interestingly, Rahul’s role was initially given to Aamir Khan and Sunny Deol. Irani revealed that Aamir rejected this part due to differences with Chopra, while Sunny chose to play the role of traditional hero. Shah Rukh Khan, however, immediately agreed to the role and accepted it without hesitation.
