Sanjay Gupta compared Sia Goyal to Rhea Chakraborty, and the internet can’t have it

Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta has come under fire on social media after comparing the public investigation of Pune murder accused Sia Goyal to the media trial on actress Rhea Chakraborty after the death of Sushant Singh Rajput. Urging people not to repeat what happened to Rhea, Gupta’s comments drew sharp criticism online, with many arguing that the two cases were not comparable.

The controversy started after Gupta shared a post on X in response to the ongoing coverage on the Sia Goyal case.
He wrote, “Not standing in judgment. Not taking sides. Just saying – can we please stop doing to Sia what we did to Rhea? We all saw that circus. Trial-by-television. Judgment before evidence. We never learn.”
Internet slammed Sanjay Gupta
His post was immediately criticized by many users who questioned why he compared the two cases.
One user wrote, “Comparing Sia with Rhea… what audacity, really?” Another commented, “True, but how can the two cases be compared? Unless I’m missing some new developments, wasn’t Sia actually present at the scene when her fiancé was pushed off the cliff?”
A third user said: “Sometimes you manage to pick the most illogical side of an argument. Stop trying so hard sir.” In whose eyes do I want to be high??” Another dismissed the post as “ragebait”, while one user asked, “Are you serious? What kind of analogy is this?”
The debate comes amid the alleged murder of 25-year-old Ketan Vishal Agarwal, a Pune-based real estate business heir. What was initially believed to be a trekking accident at Lohagadh Fort near Lonavala on June 18 later turned into a murder investigation after police alleged that Agarwal was pushed off the cliff.
According to the police, his fiancee Sia Goyal and her alleged lover Chetan Chaudhary conspired to kill him because they wanted to marry each other despite Sia’s engagement to Ketan. Investigators have claimed that Ketan had also survived an assassination attempt a few days before his death.
This comparison also refreshed memories of the media uproar over Rhea Chakraborty after the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput in 2020. Rhea faced several allegations from Rajput’s family and was arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau in a drugs-related case. She has since spoken publicly about the lasting impact the episode had on her life.
Siya Goyal case has been in the news continuously in recent times. After Sia’s brother Sahil Goyal denied that the family had appointed Ashutosh Srivastava as their lawyer, Srivastava was sent a defamation notice of Rs 10 crore, alleging that false claims were made about his role in the case.
