A few weeks ago, VESA introduced a new top-tier certification for displays called DisplayHDR True Black 1400, which raises the brightness requirement by 40% compared to the previous top standard (you guessed it, it’s now up to 1,400 nits). Samsung has just announced that its new OLED displays have earned this certification and is already supplying panels to laptop makers.
Certification requires that black pixels remain at 0.0005 nits or less, while white pixels blast out 1,400 nits at a 10% on pixel ratio (i.e. 10% of the screen pixels are looking white, the rest are black).
Samsung designed it with a tandem design – two OLED panels placed on top of each other. This enables higher peak brightness, but has other benefits as well. Since both panels share the workload, regular brightness levels can be achieved with less stress on the panels. Samsung says that under “normal laptop operating brightness conditions,” the new tandem OLED panels have more than twice the lifespan of single-stack OLED panels.
The company also used new organic emissive materials to further improve performance and increase the longevity of the panels in addition to the benefits of the tandem design.
Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i Aura Edition (11th Gen)
The new panel is already featured on the 11th generation Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i Aura Edition. It is a 16″ touchscreen with 3.2K resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. It is branded PureSight Pro Tandem OLED by Lenovo and has VESA DisplayHDR True Black 1400 certification. At peak brightness, it can reach 1,600 nits. It also has accurate colors with 100% coverage of sRGB and DCI-P3, and 99% coverage of AdobeRGB.
The laptop can be configured with an Intel Core Ultra 7 or 9 processor (356H or 386H) and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5050 or 5060 laptop GPU (both with 8GB of VRAM). System memory is 32GB LPDDR5X (7,467MT/s, soldered) and a 512GB or 1TB PCIe Gen 4 SSD (TLC). The laptop measures 17.2 mm thick and weighs 1.9 kg with a 92.5Wh battery. More information at lenovo.com.
Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i Aura Edition (11th Gen)
Laptops from other manufacturers will also use Samsung’s new tandem OLED displays – models from Asus, Dell and MSI are expected in the second half of this year. Additionally, Samsung will demo the new panels at K-Display 2026, which will be held in Seoul from July 22 to 24.
