Jake Reiner has spoken publicly for the first time in detail about the deaths of his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife Michelle Singer Reiner, and the criminal case against his younger brother Nick Reiner. Jake said no one can prepare someone for losing both parents at the same moment. He wrote that he still has to wake up every morning to remind himself that what happened is true, calling it “my living nightmare”. He said that his parents did not deserve what happened to them and that they should be remembered with love, respect and appreciation for what they gave to their children and others.

Case proceedings are ongoing

Nick Renner, 32, pleaded not guilty in a Los Angeles court on February 23. He has been held without bail since his arrest, which came hours after the bodies were discovered. A judge ordered them to return to court on April 29 to schedule a preliminary hearing, when prosecutors are expected to present evidence and a judge will decide whether the case should go to trial.

District Attorney Nathan Hochman said his office has not yet decided whether it will seek the death penalty. Prosecutors have said they are still awaiting a full autopsy report, although other evidence has been turned over to the defense.

Preliminary findings from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner said 78-year-old Rob Reiner and 70-year-old Michelle Singer Reiner died from multiple sharp force injuries. Authorities have not disclosed a possible motive, and a court order prohibits the release of further details.
