Rise in dengue fever after monsoon rains: What precautions to take?
Dengue cases are on the rise in India as rain and humidity are creating ideal conditions for mosquitoes to breed.

Rainfall has led to a rise in dengue cases in many parts of India. This mosquito-borne disease sees a seasonal surge when humidity levels rise.
Dengue, which typically lasts 8 to 10 days, is caused by one of four types of dengue viruses, which are spread by mosquito bites.
Symptoms include high fever, headache, body aches, nausea, and rash. Severe dengue can also cause abdominal pain, vomiting, bleeding from the nose or gums, and extreme fatigue.
The combination of stagnant water and warm temperatures creates an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes, particularly those of the Aedes aegypti species, which spread the dengue virus.
Here are some essential precautions to protect yourself and your loved ones from dengue fever during the monsoon season:
Eliminate stagnant water
Make sure not to allow water to collect in containers such as flower pots, buckets or discarded tyres.

Clean Water Storage
Clean water storage tanks and containers frequently and keep them covered to prevent mosquito breeding.
Check out outdoor areas
Pay attention to outdoor areas where water may collect, such as drains, gutters and plant spaces.
Use mosquito repellents
Use mosquito repellent products on exposed skin and clothing. Use mosquito repellent products containing DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, socks and shoes, especially during peak mosquito activity times (early morning and late afternoon).

Install protective measures
Sleep under a mosquito net, especially if you are in an area where mosquito activity is high. Make sure windows and doors have nets to keep mosquitoes out of your home.
Keep your surroundings clean
Maintain a clean environment around your home and community to reduce mosquito breeding sites. Dispose of garbage properly and avoid littering, as this can create mosquito breeding sites.
Stay informed and alert
Be aware of the symptoms of dengue fever, which include high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, joint and muscle pain, rash, and mild bleeding. Consult a doctor immediately if you notice any of these symptoms.
Participate in community efforts to control mosquito populations and raise awareness about dengue prevention.
