Shibli Faraz, leader of the opposition in the Pakistani Senate (upper house), praised India’s efficient election process and criticised his own country for not being able to hold transparent elections to ensure a peaceful transfer of power.

“There have just been elections [in India]More than 800 million people have voted. Thousands of polling stations were set up. Voting centers were set up even for people living in remote areas. The elections lasted for a month and were conducted using EVMs. Not a single voice was raised that the elections were rigged. We want to move forward in this manner,” Shibli Faraz said during a parliamentary session in Islamabad.

Faraz, a member of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, had held several portfolios in the previous Imran Khan-led government.

He also expressed his disappointment at the numerous controversies surrounding Pakistan’s elections, where losing candidates refused to accept defeat.

Faraz blamed the poor electoral culture in Pakistan for “hollowing out” the political system. He also asked why Pakistan cannot hold such free and fair elections.

“This is due to the vested interests of all parties, including the Muslim League and MQM,” he said.

This statement of the Pakistani Senator comes after the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won the Lok Sabha elections.

In contrast, Pakistan’s February elections were held following widespread chaos in the Islamic Republic. The elections, which the PTI was barred from contesting, were marred by allegations of fraud, snatching of nomination papers, arbitrary arrests of candidates and supporters, rejection of nomination papers and disruption of campaign events.

The Election Commission of Pakistan received more than 1,300 complaints. Polling officials did not declare the results of many seats even several days after counting began.

Observers such as the United Nations and Human Rights Watch had also pointed to pre-poll rigging ahead of the elections in Pakistan.

The role of the army and giving preference to Nawaz Sharif’s Muslim League over Imran Khan will take the issue further. Solid allegations of interference and compromised elections.
