Tamil superstar Surya Shivkumar’s much awaited film Retro, which is ready to hit theaters on 1 May, is already making waves abroad. In a stunning turn, the UK box office saw a sharp spike, with more than 3200 tickets sold within 24 hours of advance booking. Directed by Karthik Subbaraj, it seems that the vintage gangster drama is ready to do record-breaking tricks as the release date is inching.
Traditionally, Tamil films get their strongest markets in Malaysia, Singapore and Sri Lanka. However, the retro pattern is breaking quickly. Pooja Hegde’s co-integrated as a leading woman, and Jujo George, Jairam and others,, once the film was out of the trailer, hit a raga almost immediately, after being out of the trailer, almost immediately.
According to reports, Suria has seen the finished version of the retro and is happy with the result. Director Karthik Subberaj added enthusiasm that retro is not a gangster drama, even with its gritty background and impressive 20+ action scenes. Retro in its heart is a love story, a classic romance wrapped in an action-pack frame, the director revealed first.
However, the passage of dominance at the box office will not be without hurdles. Retro faced a strong competition from Telugu, with Nani’s Hit 3, directed by hit universe fame Selesh Kolanu, released on the same day. Nani is well known to use creative marketing techniques and is doing everything in its power to hit 3 in Kerala, Chennai and unexplained overseas markets. He is also a terrible contestant due to his records in foreign markets such as the United States and UK, where he commands a terrible fan.
In the already packed release schedule, Bollywood is also adding to big names. RAID 2, Ajay Devgan, Ritish Deshmukh, and Wani Kapoor starrer, is another big ticket on 1 May. The sequel to the 2018 hit, this crime is expected to grab a good part of the audience.
Even with such a heavyweight competition, retro’s foreign motion is a positive sign for fans of Suria. With the right push over the next few days, the film may script one of the most memorable opening of Tamil cinema internationally in this summer.
