After Sundar C left the much-awaited ‘Thalaivar 173’ due to unexpected and unavoidable circumstances, producer Kamal Haasan assured that he is dedicated to finding the right script. He said that the project with Rajinikanth will continue as planned.
Sundar C’s unexpected departure from directing the much-awaited film tentatively titled ‘Thalaivar 173’ – which was officially attributed to “unforeseen and unavoidable circumstances” – sparked speculation among fans. Actor-producer Kamal Haasan has now addressed the situation assuring the public that efforts are underway to take the film with Rajinikanth forward.
‘Thalaivar 173’ marks the collaboration of Kamal and Rajinikanth after four decades. In a statement to the press, Kamal acknowledged the circumstances of Sundar C’s exit. “Sundar C has explained his reason for withdrawing from the project through a press release. I have nothing to add to it,” he said, underscoring his respect for the director’s decision and refusing to elaborate further on the matter.
Sundar C, on his part, issued a note addressed to fans and well-wishers. He wrote, “Due to unexpected and unavoidable circumstances, I have taken the difficult decision to withdraw from the prestigious project #Thalaivar173.”

The project, produced by Kamal’s Raj Kamal Films International (RKFI), was confirmed at the NEXA SIIMA Awards 2025 and has become one of the most talked about films recently. Sundar C had previously directed Rajinikanth in ‘Arunachalam’ (1997) and Kamal in ‘Anbe Shivam’ (2003), raising anticipation ahead of his comeback.
Kamal assured fans that the production team is committed to delivering a film worthy of both the icons. He asserted, “We will keep exploring until my star (Rajinikanth) is satisfied with the script. Currently, we are in the process of finalizing a quality script.”
Kamal said that the search for a new director could lead to the selection of an emerging filmmaker, suggesting openness to new talent joining the project. The main highlight is the importance of linking the story with Rajinikanth’s stature and the impact of the film, complementing the vision shared by both the stars.
Although details regarding the possible replacement or new timeline have not been revealed, Kamal Haasan has hinted about the direction the story may take. He told reporters to “expect the unexpected.”
