Raid 2 Movie Review: Ajay Devgan’s film breaks under the weight of his stardom
In ‘Red 2’, you never meet an honest income tax officer Ajay Patnaik, because Ajay Devgan never gives the character. He looks like both Singham and Vijay Salagaonkar in the parts, and a half-cakes run the story.

Intense drama like ‘raid’ is an ideal recipe for an attractive film. Ajay Devgan, both, is both entertaining and complicated. You know that the hero is going to work, and now this is his journey about which you are excited about. In the new film ‘Red 2’ in the franchise, Devgan resumes the role of a non-Bakwas, honest income tax officer, Amay Patnaik. But this time, we do not see him enough – we see a braiding Ajay Devgan.
‘Red 2’ brings Ritish Deshmukh as Dadabhai, a powerful politician said as People’s Messiah in a fictional kingdom called Bhoj. Patnaik’s entry into Dadabhai’s kingdom indicates trouble – a confrontation between two huge figures, both famous and respected in their community, and almost equally sharp and funny.
Raj Kumar Gupta, who directed the first film at the franchise, returned to the sequel. And Saurabh Shukla repeated his prestigious ‘Tauji’, who is still serving a jail sentence. Vani Kapoor converted Ileana D’Suza into Patnaik’s wife.
The film begins with a long shot of the convoy of ambassador cars led by Patnaik, which reaches the palace of a powerful politician. Govind Namdev plays the role of this royal, power-booker, which not only accumulates black money, but also uses goons and guns to threaten government officials.
Devgn wears its signature aviars – even in the dark -, because, of course, stardom. Government officials run into fear when the politician flexes his muscles. We see how the film fools the department in that scene. But, we move forward.
Patnaik is accused of accepting a bribe, and is transferred for the 74th time. Enter Dadabhai – A dedicated maternal uncle’s boy who wash his mother’s feet with milk in a temple, someone who is morally flawed, but keeps his mother’s blessings above everyone. Patnaik and Dadabhai’s clash meets the rest of the story-chase of a cat-and-mouse where the honest officer will have to reveal and withdraw illegal assets from one of the most incomplete political figures in the country. It is not just about a job that needs to be done, but about a dream that people have seen for Dadabhai, which should be broken.
A lot is going on in ‘Red 2’. It has more than two songs that have been put to look more ‘film’, and there is a plot that needs to be tightened. The first half of the film produces Amay Patnaik’s passion for smartness and duty. It also establishes him as a family person – a description that has no relevance in the story. But, even though you ignore songs, irrelevant characters and The Mendering Katha, you cannot help, but note how Devgan actually allows Patnaik to emerge as a film hero.
Devgan bears a cool intensity in his eyes, and a purposeful walk that always suggests that he is calculating his next step. All this is effective – essential, even – but it does not help the character he is playing. In ‘Red 2’, the actor feels different from Patnaik, never fully incarnates the character that seems different or memorable.
Amay Patnaikhardali smiles. He maintains a severe air, reveals all businesses and is completely inspired by duty – all classic Devgan Symptoms. In Patnaik, you never meet a different person. He is the one who is Devgan.
Ritish is as well cast as Dadabhai, but this villain is not enough. Her eyes speak trouble and her smile stands for mischievous, but she has a lack of Shukla’s biological style. Dadabhai is not written like a terrible villain. He is so polished and sophisticated that he looks stupid in front of Amay Patnaik- an imbalance film did not clearly intend. ‘Red 2’ wants you to see him as a popular, almost revered leader who has a dark, corrupt and exploiting side. The character is not written with sufficient nuances to make that opposite reliable. The character lacks depth and is not enough between being a revered son or a crooked people, never completely committed.

While the character development is thin, the narrative structure is also uneven. The dance number with the characteristic of Tamanna Bhatia appears completely out of place, and the view of Vani is upside down. This is not a film that requires a romantic subplot or any amount of glamor to attract audiences. The idea of including all this in the story also suggests lack of confidence on the part of the manufacturers.
Dialogues, however, provide some relief. You laugh and feel good about your hero “Main Kab Kah main Pandav Hoon, Main Toh Puri’s Puri Mahabharata Hoon“, Or “Koi koi koi bhiye, department toh come and my jaij log chalet hain“, Or “Karley is necessary to attack Kelly every time to cook the king” – Lines that stand out and lift the moment – Pal.
The climax provides some shutdown and entertainment, and prevents the film from collapse completely. But, because we have seen better than the same world of Devgan than intense plays, we expect better. This appears to be a weak attempt to take the franchise forward. More time was required to develop ‘Raid 2’ – more marination, and a subtle eligible during cooking. Instead, it is cooked half, lack of taste and not asking us more.
