Pooja Bhatt recalls Mahesh’s decision to choose Islam before marrying Soni Razdan
Actress Pooja Bhatt has spoken about Mahesh Bhatt converting to Islam before marrying Soni Razdan and why he never divorced her mother Kiran Bhatt.
Actress-filmmaker Pooja Bhatt has opened up about filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt’s conversion to Islam before marrying actor Soni Razdan in 1986, saying her father will “never separate” from her mother Kiran Bhatt.
In a recent interview with Vicky Lalwani, Pooja reflected on her parents’ unconventional relationship and said that Mahesh chose to convert because he did not want to divorce Kiran.
Talking about the family dynamics, Pooja said that despite starting a new family with Soni Razdan, Mahesh Bhatt never broke ties with her mother. “He was never separated from my mother,” she said. She said one thing she always knew about her father was that “once he holds your hand, no matter who you are, he doesn’t let go.”

Why did Mahesh Bhatt embrace Islam?
During the interview, Pooja recalled that Mahesh Bhatt had converted to Islam before marrying Soni Razdan because he did not want to formally end his marriage with Kiran Bhatt.
Pooja described her father as someone who remains loyal to the people in his life, be it family members, colleagues or the actors he directs. “He’s there. He’s reliable,” she said.
The actor also addressed his father’s decision to go ahead with the marriage while maintaining respect and emotional support for his mother.
What did Pooja Bhatt say on her parents’ relationship?
Pooja said that she respects Mahesh Bhatt’s honesty in admitting that his feelings have changed rather than maintaining appearances for the society.
“Do I want a father who accepts that he is human… or would I prefer a father who lives under one roof for the sake of society?” he asked during the conversation.
She said that although the “nature of love” between her parents has changed over the years, they are still emotionally connected and have supported each other through difficult times.
How is Pooja Bhatt’s relationship with Soni Razdan and Alia Bhatt?
Pooja also talked about growing close to Soni Razdan over the years. He recalls the ‘Dil Se Dil’ conversation he had with Soni during the making of the film Love affairA film that was to be directed by Sony but was never released.
According to Pooja, he told Soni that “You can’t break the relationship that was there together. There is no room for anyone in a relationship that is strong. Something was missing, so someone else could come and get that place.”
She said, “The nature of love has changed. But they are one unit. When people ask me, ‘What about love?’ I say can love be when two people can stand up for each other morally in good and bad times. Even if the world is on one side and you are wrong, you can still stand by my side.”
Pooja said that she now shares a warm relationship with Soni and considers Alia Bhatt and Shaheen Bhatt an important part of her extended family. He said that despite their busy schedules, the family still comes together on holidays and special occasions.
