Brady Corbett’s film The Brutilist has discussed a lot during this year’s awards season; However, it has also stuck in a dispute over the application of generic AI technology during postproduction.
The cruelist earned nominations of ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Acting Nomination for Adrian Body and Felicity Jones. The controversy arose when the film’s editor, David Janso, revealed that Responsor’s AI voice technology was used to polish Jones and Body Hungarian lines.
In an interview with Redshaark News, Jancsó said, “If you are coming from Anglo-Saxon world, it can be especially difficult to understand some sounds. We first tried to adr these difficult elements with the actors. Then we tried to fully adr with other actors, but we just did not work to increase it.
Since the actor is not a native Hungarian speaker, the A-edged process ensured perfection in pronunciation by mixing the voice of the Janso with the actors. ‘He was to preserve the authenticity of Hungarian language.
He admitted, “Talking about AI is controversial in the industry, but it should not be. We should openly discuss what equipment AI can provide us. Using AI, there is nothing in the film using AI that has not been done before. It just makes the process very fast.”
Budget boundaries contributed to this technical solution. Since the cruelist had an independent budget of less than $ 10 million, postproduction needed to be efficient. Jancsó reported that it takes time to correct the dialogue manually, so AI presented a viable solution to speed up the process.
“We use AI to create these small details that we did not have time to shoot,” Jansos said.
Other allegations included the use of AI for architectural drawing in the final scenes of the film, which was denied by Corbett.
The controversy has raised widespread industry issues about AI’s moral application in film production. Although there are examples in AI-Augmented audio post-processing-there are voices together during music concerts-AI raised questions of morality to change the words spoken.
While the cinematic industry is trying to navigate around such concerns, AI sits in the heart of dispute around the AI applications in cruelist cinema.
