It’s the season of flagship launches, and two chipsets are in the spotlight right now – the MediaTek Dimensity 9400 and the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite chip. Now, both of these chips are powerful in their own right, each excelling in specific areas. Yet as we move forward we will see flagship phones coming with Snapdragon or Dimensity inside them. The first phones to be revealed this year, and it’s a change compared to how we’ve seen it in previous years, are phones powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 9400 chipset. Yes, we are talking about Oppo’s two flagships – Find X8 and Find X8 Pro.
But why dimensions in a phone that costs close to Rs 1 lakh and is a true blue-blood flagship, is a question many are asking. Join us at India Today Tech. Especially considering that in this price segment we are more used to seeing phones powered by Dragons, it can be said.
Seeing that we had a question, we asked. Oppo’s answer nicely explains the Dimensity 9400 inside the Find X8 phone. Yes, that makes sense. At the global launch of the Find X8 series, India Today Tech had the opportunity to speak with Arne Herkelmann, Head of Product Management, Oppo. He explained how Oppo works with chipset manufacturers.
Adding that the company collaborates with both MediaTek and Qualcomm for its chipset needs, Herkelman said that the decision to choose MediaTek’s Dimensity 9400 was not about choosing one brand over another, but rather choosing whether What was best for the Find X8 flagship and the experience they were aiming for. To provide to users.
“We work with both companies and we always choose the chipset and supplier, vendor, partner that offers the best for the actual product. With the Find X8 series, we chose MediaTek, while the Oppo Pad 3 Pro – Whatever was introduced at the global event – Qualcomm uses that,” Herkelman said.
It’s all about preferences, and which chip offers what. Our conversation with Herkelman gave us the impression that this time with the Find X8 phone, Oppo has decided to take a huge step up on battery life and efficiency. And to achieve its battery life target, the company opted for the MediaTek Dimensity 9400 chipset.
Herkelman highlighted that the new Find X8 series “offers approximately 40 percent greater energy efficiency.” And this battery efficiency is a direct result of the Oppo product team choosing the Dimensity 9400 chipset.
“The Dimensity 9400 is the perfect fit for us this year and it supports what we wanted to achieve with the Find X8 and Find X8 Pro.[We wanted]thinner smartphones, lighter smartphones, very powerful smartphones with batteries that last almost forever,” Herkelman highlighted.
It is important to note that these claims are backed by the actual performance of the Find X8 series phones. In our review, both the Find X8 and Find X8 Pro impressed us with their exceptional battery life, completely validating Oppo’s claims about the Dimensity 9400’s efficiency. In the battery test we ran using PCMark, the Find X8 lasted about 18 hours and 9 minutes. Meanwhile, the Find X8 Pro lasted 20 hours and 45 minutes. Keep in mind that this test does not drain the battery to zero percent. Instead, it turns off when the remaining battery is 20 percent.
These are some of the most impressive, and certainly the most impressive for a flagship phone, battery figures we’ve seen in a smartphone so far. So yes, it looks like Oppo and MediaTek have created some magic with the efficiency and battery usage of the Dimensity 9400.
Flat screen on Find X8, curved screen on Find X8 Pro: why
Now, while the question of the Dimensity 9400 has troubled us, there was another observation we highlighted in our review: the question of flat versus curved displays. This year, in the Find X8 series, Oppo chose a flat display for the standard Find X8, while the premium Find X8 Pro got a curved screen. This is also when flat screens – as seen in phones like the iPhone and Pixel – are more in fashion these days. Why?
According to Oppo, the company opted for a more compact, square form factor for the standard Find X8 because users preferred a flat design. However, for the Pro model, the company came with a display with curved edges. The reason for this is the size of the Pro phone, which is bigger. And while “big” can’t be helped, Oppo wanted the phone to be thin and easy to hold.
“With the Find While others prefer flat displays,” Herkelman said.
For the more premium Pro model, he explained, “Because it’s a larger screen, we decided to use our Infinite View display to balance the size. Otherwise, it would need to be thicker, because the flat edges would make the phone “With the infinite view, it’s hard to hold, with very slight curvature at the edges.”
In a way this creates an interesting dichotomy, a paradox that is unusual. Usually companies adopt a more demanding look on their more expensive phones. But Oppo has continued to keep the Find X8 Pro looking more familiar, if somewhat dated, with curved edges, giving way to a flat look for the Find X8.
Still, the company has legitimate reasons for doing so. Phones like the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL and iPhone 16 Pro Max — which have flat screens and flat frames — can be slightly unfurled to hold. Phones with curved edges allow for more comfortable holding and carrying. In other words, the Find X8 is a sleeker-looking phone, while the Find X8 Pro takes a more practical approach.
