OpenAI has finally launched its first Google competitor, ChatGPT Search. After releasing the prototype SearchGPT, the ChatGPT model has been well learned to provide answers in real time. According to OpenAI, users can get fast, timely answers with links to relevant web sources that previously would have required you to go to a search engine. “It blends the benefits of a natural language interface with the value of the latest sports scores, news, stock quotes and more,” OpenAI said. ChatGPT will choose to search the web based on the request you made, or you can choose to search manually by clicking the web search icon.
This is currently available to all ChatGPT Plus and Teams users. Additionally, SearchGPT waitlisted users will also get it today. Enterprise and Edu users will get access in the next few weeks. OpenAI will also roll out this feature to all of its free users in the coming months.

What is chatgpt search?
ChatGPT Search, powered by an advanced version of OpenAI’s GPT-4 model, provides real-time information and images from around the web, such as sports scores, news updates, stock prices and more, along with links to trusted sources. Users can also ask follow-up questions to refine their searches.
Prior to this update, ChatGPT’s knowledge model depended on a cutoff of 2021 to 2023, depending on the version. OpenAI spokesperson Nico Felix said that, despite the availability of live search, the company will continue to update its training data to “ensure users always have access to the latest advances”, although this process remains “separate” from model training.

The search model is an optimized version of GPT-4o, trained with innovative synthetic data generation methods, including output distillation from OpenAI’s O1-Preview. ChatGPT Search integrates direct content from partner providers as well as information from third-party search engines to provide users with the answers they want.
Responses include in-text and sidebar citations from news outlets and data providers with which OpenAI partners. For example, a search for weekend activities in San Francisco might provide summaries from local news sites, while a follow-up on nearby dining options would provide a curated list of restaurants.
According to OpenAI, information for election questions will be drawn from outlets such as AP and Reuters.

OpenAI has announced its intention to continue using its o1 “reasoning” model for more in-depth research and to enhance its search capabilities, particularly in shopping and travel. The company also plans to expand ChatGPAT Search to its advanced voice mode and make it available to users who are not logged in.
