"One in lakhs": Chinese woman with 2 uteruses gives birth to a baby from each

A woman in northwest China has given birth to twins from two different uteruses, a rare medical phenomenon. The condition known as uterine didelphys affects only 0.3% of women worldwide. Remarkably, both uteruses were fully developed, along with ovaries and oviducts. according to South China Morning PostThe woman, surnamed Li, gave birth to a boy and a girl at Xi’an No. 4 Hospital in Shaanxi province in early September, when she was eight and a half months pregnant. The babies were born healthy, the boy weighed 3.3 kg and the girl weighed 2.4 kg.

Cai Ying, a senior gynecologist at the hospital, described Li’s pregnancy as a “one in a million” event. “It is very rare to get pregnant in each of the two uteruses through natural conception. We have only heard of a few such cases from both China and abroad,” Cai said. SCMP.

Lee, whose age has not been disclosed, experienced a miscarriage at 27 weeks in a previous pregnancy due to unknown factors. When she became pregnant again in January, doctors at Xi’an No. 4 Hospital developed a special plan to ensure her safety.

To reduce the risks, Lee had to undergo a cesarean section. Luckily, she and her newborn twins – a boy and a girl – were discharged from the hospital just four days after birth.

According to China’s state broadcaster CCTV, a similar case took place in the US state of Alabama in December last year. A woman gave birth to twin girls, who were developing in separate uteruses. Specifically, this mother had previously given birth to three children, but those pregnancies involved only one of her two uteruses.

Double uterus condition:

  • Uterine didelphys occurs when two fallopian tubes in a female fetus fail to join during development, resulting in two separate uteruses.
  • In some cases, each uterus has its own cervix, and a thin tissue wall may divide the vagina into two separate chambers.
  • Women who have two uteruses do not face any symptoms until they become pregnant.
  • During pregnancy, they face a higher risk of miscarriage, fetal underdevelopment, premature birth, and bleeding after delivery.
