US President Donald Trump on Wednesday once again called for the United States to take control of Greenland, claiming the Arctic island is strategically important to global security but ‘not important’ to Denmark. The comments come as Trump has repeatedly sought to revive the long-running dispute, which has strained relations between Washington and Copenhagen and drawn criticism from European allies.Speaking with Mark Rutte during a NATO meeting, Trump argued that the United States should never have returned Greenland to Denmark after World War II.“Greenland is very important to the United States but it is not important to Denmark. In fact, when Denmark was occupied by the Nazis in less than a day … they told us to take care of Greenland,” Trump said.He said, “We shouldn’t have given it back to them because we are the ones who need it. We need it for the security of the world—not just the United States.”During the exchange, Rutte said he understood Trump’s concerns over Arctic security and noted that the two sides had previously agreed to increase the US military presence in Greenland. He also said that this system will be implemented in phases. However, Trump reiterated that he is dissatisfied with NATO, before Rutte praised the US President, with Trump joking, “That’s why I like him.

Trump reiterates pressure on Greenland

Trump’s latest comments follow similar comments he made on Tuesday, when he said during a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan that Greenland ‘should be controlled by the United States, not by Denmark.’He argued that Denmark is not investing enough in Greenland and claimed that the island’s location has become increasingly important due to increasing Chinese and Russian activity in the Arctic.Trump had said, “Denmark doesn’t actually spend money to help Greenland, but it is an important part for the United States.” He said Greenland is surrounded by Chinese and Russian ships and is important to US national security.

Why does Trump want Greenland?

Greenland, the world’s largest island, is an autonomous region of Denmark located between North America and Europe. It occupies a strategically important position in the Arctic and lies along the major North Atlantic sea routes. The island is also rich in rare earth minerals, oil and gas resources, while melting Arctic ice is expected to open up new shipping routes, increasing its geopolitical importance. The United States already maintains a military presence there under a 1951 defense agreement with Denmark.Trump has repeatedly argued that Greenland is essential to US national security, citing growing competition in the Arctic between Russia and China. Although he has acknowledged the island’s mineral wealth at times, he has consistently stated that security rather than natural resources is the primary reason for his interest.

Denmark rejected Trump’s demand

Trump’s renewed calls have been repeatedly rejected by the leadership of Denmark and Greenland.Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has said that Greenland is ‘not for sale’ and stressed that Denmark expects its allies to respect Danish sovereignty. The government of Greenland has also consistently opposed any proposal to make the territory part of the United States, while opinion polls show overwhelming public opposition among Greenlanders to such a move.Trump first floated the idea of acquiring Greenland during his first presidential term in 2019 and revived it after returning to office, calling US ownership or control of the Arctic region an ‘imperative requirement’ for national security. His repeated comments remain a source of diplomatic friction between the United States, Denmark, and several European allies.
