Nellikampoyil Knight Riders review: Matthew Thomas’ horror comedy is quirky but struggles to remain funny and scary

Nellikkampoyil Knight Riders starring Matthew Thomas in the lead role was released in theaters on October 24, 2025. Months after its theatrical release, the film is now available for streaming on ZEE5.

If you are planning to watch the movie online, here is the Pinkvilla review that you should check out.

plot

Nellikampoyil Night Riders is set in the village of Nellikampoyil in the early 2000s, where the appearance of a mysterious masked figure with horse’s feet shakes the villagers to their core. Since this ominous and dark myth haunts everyone, its story is based on the life of a young man named Shyam.

Despite family troubles, Shyam, an insecure man with alpha ambitions, is obsessed with wooing his girlfriend, Dhanya. In an attempt to win her over, he decides to uncover the mystery behind the myth along with two of his close friends.

Shyam’s journey progresses to uncover the truth and determine if there is any reality behind the myths present in the village.

Good

The basic idea behind Nellikampoyil Knight Riders is what makes it unique on paper. The plot brings back elements from old cartoon shows like Courage the Cowardly Dog and Scooby-Doo, making it a story that is fun and scary without heavy or dark elements.

While the written material seems entertaining, the film offers few respites in the first half of its narrative. Matthew Thomas handles his character quite well in some parts, while Sarath Sabha and Roshan Shanavas offer many laugh-out-loud moments.

Even though the film fails to be consistently impressive as a whole, it does provide quick laughs that make it quite fun to watch. The editing is excellent, and the work is done by Gary Perera and Neha S. Nair’s musical compositions offer subtle tracks that remain memorable, blending classical and modern elements without ever becoming too loud.

Furthermore, Abhilash Shankar delivers spectacular visuals that add to the overall visual appeal of the film.

bad

Nellikampoyil Knight Riders is entertaining but it is not without its flaws. While the basic idea of the film is humorous, many of the characters are either simplistic or underdeveloped. The primary antagonist never fully develops into a threatening presence, and the female lead is underwritten, serving only as a catalyst for plot progression without adding much depth.

Although the film is technically strong, the underdeveloped writing and uneven performances make it difficult to watch at times.

Display

Matthew Thomas offers some good moments, but overall his performance falls flat. Though he handles the humor well, the scary moments fail to make an impact. Sarath Sabha and Roshan Shanavas provide some relief, while Meenakshi Unnikrishnan needed more screen time to show her character properly.

Decision

Nellikampoyil Knight Riders is entertaining in parts and offers moments of humor in an ambitious narrative. However, the film becomes static at times, making it unwatchable for some viewers.
