Actor Amitabh Bachchan’s granddaughter and entrepreneur Navya Naveli Nanda spoke on the Kolkata rape and murder case and offered her perspective on the social and systemic failures behind such incidents. The young entrepreneur said women deserve better in society.

Navya spoke about the incident during a session titled ‘Beyond the Legacy: Gen Z for a Just and Equal India’ at the India Today Mumbai Conclave 2024 on Thursday, September 26. She emphasised on the need for accountability and the shared responsibility of both. The role of men and women in preventing such tragedies,

Navya said, “I think what happened in Kolkata is not the first time. This is something we have seen happen many times. It was outrageous and horrible. We as a country, women, people and society want law enforcement and protocols but it is very easy for us to sit and demand.”

Navya also spoke about the need to hold people accountable, “I think we need to be accountable and responsible as members of society. I think it’s an equal responsibility to create a safe environment for women, not just at work but at home as well. As members of society, we should chip in. That said, strong women deserve better. She deserved better, and I don’t think anyone should have the right to take that away,” she added.

The accused in the rape-murder case of the trainee doctor was arrested a day after the victim’s body was found on the premises on August 9.
