National Award-winning Malayalam actor Salim Kumar died while undergoing treatment for pneumonia at a private hospital in Kochi on Saturday night. He was 56 years old.

According to family sources, Kumar died at around 10.43 pm following sudden health complications. The actor, who had undergone a liver transplant several years ago, was admitted to the hospital on the very first day and was put on ventilator support. His demise has sparked a wave of mourning among the Malayalam film industry, political leaders and fans across the country.

Kerala Chief Minister VD Satheesan expressed deep grief over Kumar’s death and described him as “more than a film star” and a brother and family member.

In his condolence message, Satheesan said Kumar rose from a humble background in North Paravur to become one of the most respected actors of Indian cinema. He also recalled that the actor’s last public appearance was at a welcome function organized by the people of Paravur a few days ago.

Who was Salim Kumar?
