Infosys founder NR Narayan Murthy has expressed concern that the term “Artificial Intelligence” (AI) is being used carelessly by technical firms in India. Speaking at Tie Con Mumbai 2025, Murthy expressed disappointment on the trend of companies to brand basic software programs as AI. “I think it has become a fashion for everything in India to talk about AI. I have seen many common, ordinary programs as AI,” he commented.
Murthy explained in detail on the actual basic things of AI, especially focused on machine learning and deep learning. He reported that the machine is based on correlation of large sets of learning data, helping the system make predictions. “This is simple machine learning,” he said, describing it as dealing with supervised algorithms, which requires a lot of input data.
However, the idol highlighted AI’s deep learning as a more advanced component. He explained that deep learning mimics the human brain, allowing the system to handle unheard algorithms that do not require pre-fed data. He said, “Deep learning uses data to create programs or new branches of new conditions. And then it will be able to decide,” he said.
The idol explained that deep learning power lies in its ability to work with unsafe data and nerve network, making it more capable of mimicking human behavior. He also expressed disappointment over the current misuse of the word AI, stating, “But what I am seeing is being called AI, it is foolish, old programs.”
Infosys is actively developing AI tools, with special attention to the small language model (SLM). These models have been created using both open-source components and the company’s ownership data.
Earlier, in a clear and thoughtful discussion, Infosys co-founder NR Narayan Murthy ignited a nationwide debate, suggesting that the youth of India should be ready to work 70 hours a week to elevate the country’s work culture and compete effectively on the global platform. Speaking on the inaugural episode of Podcast ‘The Record’ of 3one4 Capital, ‘Murthy emphasized the urgency of India’s work productivity. He argued that the country would struggle to catch the economies that have seen remarkable progress over the last few decades until the youth of India are committed for more work hours.
In a conversation with former Infosys CFO Mohandas Pai, Murthy indicated India’s weak function productivity, the lowest in the world. To bridge the difference with countries such as China, he attracted similarities to Japan and Germany, which encouraged their recovery by fixing the work of post -World War II and dedication of dedication after World War II.
The entrepreneur also discussed about other obstacles of India’s progress, including government corruption and bureaucracy inefficiencies. He said that the need to reduce these obstacles for India is to emerge as a global precursor.
The idol asked the youth of today to handle the mantra of nation-building, “So, my request is that our youth will say,” This is my country. I would like to work 70 hours a week. ” He further attracted attention to historical examples, commenting, “This is what Germans and Japanese did after World War II … he ensured that each German worked for a few years.”
